DSG & S tronic repair & service in Melbourne
Specialist diagnostics, servicing and repairs for VAG dual-clutch gearboxes — Volkswagen DSG, Audi S tronic, Škoda DSG and Cupra DSG. Based in Williamstown North. Mechatronic repair and replacement, TCU cloning, clutch packs, scheduled fluid service (DQ200, DQ250, DQ381 and more) — with clear quotes before major work.

DSG (and Audi's S tronic branding) uses two clutches and a mechatronic valve body to shift gears. When it works, it is fast and efficient — when it fails, symptoms can be sudden and expensive if ignored.
At StalexAuto we focus on evidence-based diagnosis first: scan data, adaptations, oil condition and road testing — then mechatronic repair or replacement, clutch work or service as required.
For general transmission and gearbox work (non-DSG), see our Transmission & gearbox repair page.
DSG repairs
DSG diagnostics
Full scan of the TCU/mechatronic and related modules, road-test where safe, and review of adaptation values. We verify the fault — not just read codes — before recommending parts.
Mechatronic repair
Assessment and repair of the mechatronic unit (valve body, solenoids, sensors, wiring) where repair is viable. We explain what failed and what is worth fixing vs replacing.
Mechatronic replacement
Supply and fit of replacement mechatronic units when repair is not economical or not possible. Includes TCU cloning where required, coding/adaptation and fluid service for the gearbox type.
TCU cloning
Transfer of vehicle-specific data from your original DSG TCU/mechatronic to a replacement unit — needed on many VAG applications so the gearbox matches your car, immobiliser and adaptations. We clone, code and run basic settings after fitment.
Clutch pack replacement
Dual-clutch (wet or dry) replacement on DSG gearboxes — common on higher-mileage DQ200 and DQ250 applications. Quoted after inspection; we do not guess on clutch wear.
DSG fluid service
Correct oil and filter changes for wet DSG units (DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and similar). Dry DQ200 units use a separate service schedule — we confirm your gearbox code first.
Adaptation & programming
Basic settings, adaptations and software updates after repairs or component replacement so shifts are smooth and the TCU matches your vehicle.
Indicative information only. The correct repair path depends on fault codes, oil condition, mileage and a physical inspection. We provide a written quote before major work.
DSG servicing & maintenance
Preventive DSG servicing is often cheaper than mechatronic or clutch repairs. Wet and dry dual-clutch units use different oils, filters and schedules — we always identify your DQ code and follow the correct VAG procedure for your car.
Wet DSG oil & filter service
Gearbox oil and filter replacement for DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and similar wet-clutch units. Drain/fill or exchange as appropriate, and post-service checks.
DQ200 dry DSG service
Separate procedures for dry-clutch DSG: gearbox oil service and, where required, mechatronic / control-unit fluid — not the same as a wet DSG service.
Pre-service inspection
Scan for stored and pending faults, check adaptation values and oil condition where accessible before committing to fluid work — avoids servicing a gearbox that already needs repair.
Adaptation reset after service
Basic settings and adaptations after fluid or component work so shift quality returns to normal.
DSG service with logbook
We can carry out manufacturer-scheduled DSG fluid work as part of your wider logbook service — documentation supplied for your records.
Pre-purchase DSG check
Useful when buying a used VW, Audi, Škoda or Cupra with DSG: fluid history, fault codes, road test and honest advice on upcoming costs.
Service intervals by gearbox code
Wet and dry DSG units are not serviced the same way. Below is a practical guide — your logbook and our VIN lookup determine the exact job.
| Code | Typical service | Interval (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| DQ200 | Gearbox oil service and mechatronic fluid check/replace per factory schedule; clutch packs are a wear item, not part of routine fluid service. | Often quoted around 60,000 km / 4 years for oil-related items on many models — confirm in your owner’s manual or service book. |
| DQ250 | Drain and fill or fluid exchange with filter replacement; scan and adaptation check afterwards. | Commonly 60,000 km / 4–5 years on many VAG schedules, or sooner under heavy use — some models differ. |
| DQ381 | Oil and filter service, fault scan, road test. | Typically similar to other wet DSG units; we verify against your VIN and factory data. |
| DQ500 | Fluid and filter service, pressure/adaptation checks, software scan. | Often 60,000 km / 4–5 years on many applications — confirm for your engine and model year. |
| DL382 / DL501 | Fluid and filter replacement, adaptations, road test. | Audi S tronic schedules vary by model — we use factory data for your chassis. |
Why scheduled DSG service matters
- Old or incorrect fluid accelerates mechatronic wear and shift quality problems
- Blocked or overdue filters restrict flow on wet DSG units
- Missed services make clutch wear harder to separate from oil-related faults
- Documented DSG service history helps resale and pre-purchase confidence
Service intervals vary by model year, engine and factory schedule. We confirm the correct procedure for your vehicle before work — this is general guidance, not a substitute for your logbook or in-dash service indicator.
DSG gearbox codes (DQ family)
Customers and forums often refer to gearbox types by internal codes. We identify your unit before quoting — labels, software and vehicle data — but these are the common VAG dual-clutch families:
| Code | Type | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|
| DQ200 | 7-speed dry dual-clutch | Common in VW Polo, Golf, Tiguan, Audi A1/A3, Škoda Octavia/Fabia and similar smaller–mid platforms. |
| DQ250 | 6-speed wet dual-clutch | Widely used across VW, Audi (S tronic) and Škoda — Golf GTI/R, Passat, Tiguan, A3, A4, Q3 and many others. |
| DQ381 | 7-speed wet dual-clutch | Newer MQB and related platforms — higher torque capacity than DQ250 on many models. |
| DQ500 | 7-speed wet dual-clutch | Higher torque applications — larger VW/Audi/Škoda models, some Q5, A4/A6, Kodiaq, Superb and performance variants. |
| DL382 / DL501 | 7-speed wet (longitudinal S tronic) | Audi longitudinal platforms (e.g. some A4/A5/A6/Q5) — often referred to as S tronic rather than DSG in marketing. |

Common questions
Do you only work on Volkswagen DSG?
No. We specialise in the full VAG DSG family — Volkswagen DSG, Audi S tronic, Škoda DSG and Cupra DSG — at our Unit 2/44-48 Bentley Street, Williamstown North VIC 3016 workshop. Porsche PDK and other brands use different systems and are quoted separately.
Can you repair the mechatronic instead of replacing it?
Sometimes yes. After diagnostics we advise whether mechatronic repair, replacement or clutch work is the right path. We do not recommend replacing expensive components without evidence.
What is TCU cloning on a DSG?
When the mechatronic or transmission control unit is replaced, cloning copies vehicle-specific data from your original unit to the new one. On many VAG DSG and S tronic gearboxes this is required so the TCU matches your car — we handle cloning, coding and adaptations as part of the replacement process where needed.
What is the difference between DQ200 and DQ250?
DQ200 is a 7-speed dry clutch unit (common in smaller cars). DQ250 is a 6-speed wet clutch unit with different oil, service and failure patterns. We identify your gearbox from labels, software and vehicle data before quoting.
How do I book a DSG inspection?
Use Book a Service or Get a Quote on our website, or call 0478 588 683 during workshop hours (Tue-Sat / 9am-7pm). Describe symptoms and your vehicle model/year if you can.
How often should DSG oil be changed?
It depends on your gearbox code and factory schedule. Wet units (DQ250, DQ381, DQ500 and similar) usually need oil and filter service on a time/km interval — often around 60,000 km or 4–5 years on many VAG models. Dry DQ200 has separate gearbox and mechatronic fluid schedules. We confirm what your car needs before quoting.
Is DSG service included in a normal logbook service?
Sometimes partially, but DSG fluid is often a separate scheduled item on VAG logbooks. We can combine logbook servicing with the correct DSG fluid work in one visit and record both properly.
