Pre-purchase car inspection in Melbourne: what to expect
What a pre-purchase inspection covers, when to book one, and how an independent workshop inspection helps before you buy a used car in Melbourne.
Why book a pre-purchase inspection
A pre-purchase inspection is one of the best ways to avoid expensive surprises after you buy a used car. Sellers — private or dealer — may not know every fault, and cosmetic presentation does not tell you what is happening mechanically.
At an independent workshop, the goal is an honest picture of the vehicle: visible condition, road behaviour, fault codes, and any signs of deferred maintenance or previous poor repairs.
What we typically check
Scope varies by vehicle age and your concerns, but a thorough inspection usually includes a road test, scan-tool diagnostics, underbody and fluid checks, brake and tyre assessment, suspension and steering inspection, and notes on leaks, corrosion or accident damage indicators.
For European and premium vehicles we also look for brand-specific patterns — DSG or S tronic shudder, air suspension faults, diesel injector leaks, timing service history, and incomplete coding after prior module work.
Inspection vs a basic roadworthy
A roadworthy certificate checks minimum legal safety at a point in time. A pre-purchase inspection is deeper: it is for you as the buyer, with plain-language findings and photos where useful, so you can negotiate or walk away with confidence.
We document what we find and explain what is urgent, what can wait, and what is normal for that model and mileage.
When to book
Book before you pay a deposit or hand over money. If the seller will not allow an independent inspection, that is useful information on its own.
Allow time for a proper check — rushed inspections miss intermittent faults. If you are comparing two cars, separate bookings keep findings clear for each vehicle.
Common questions
How long does a pre-purchase inspection take?
Most inspections take between one and two hours depending on the vehicle and any follow-up tests required after the initial road test and scan.
Can you inspect a car at the seller’s location?
Inspections are completed at our Williamstown North workshop so we can lift the vehicle, check fluids properly, and use workshop diagnostic equipment.
Do you inspect European and premium cars?
Yes. We specialise in European and premium vehicles and also inspect Japanese, Korean and other makes when a thorough independent check is needed.
